The FlashDrive

Our Vision Statement

Posted on: November 19, 2009

My name is John, I am an AmeriCorps second year member and am currently serving in the Missouri Career the tall one

I am here with an urgent problem.

The job market is a mess. You know it and so do we. It’s hard enough for those of us with a decent computer, laptop, netbook to find work these days. Imagine how hard it would be if you didn’t have that advantage. Go ahead I’ll wait.

Yea, weak .

Believe it or not there is a large community of people who don’t have internet access (shocking but true) and a subset of that community that don’t have a computer at home. Thankfully the Career Centers here in Missouri provide computers and internet for free to this community, but there is a problem.

Public computers means no saving on the hard drive. To solve this issue, the state chose the cheapest the most cost effective solution they could come up with. 3 1/4 inch drives. Every file they download, resume they create, all their user data stored on 1.44 megs of data.

1.44 MEGABYTES srsly.

Look, the point is that the visitors of the Missouri Career Centers are trapped in the early 90’s, forced into using 3 1/4 inch floppy discs for their day to day data usage. With all their important info trapped on such antiquated media, our clients are stuck at a technological disadvantage. The floppy might as well be proprietary media, nowhere else will you find a computer with a floppy drive. This keeps the clients here at the centers which causes congestion and frustration and prevents them from using their data anywhere else. Try and find a computer outside a government office that still uses floppies. Ill wait again.

Here’s where YOU come in. Look around your room, backpack, purse, office drawer whatever and dig out an old flash drive. Now wipe the data clean and throw it into a envelope and mail that sucka to:

1315 Ann ave, St Louis MO 63104 That’s the AmeriCorps office address here in STL

Your old drive will be donated to the clientele of the Missouri Career Centers and you will receive an awesome thank you letter and a certificate from us here at AmeriCorps STL.

Do your part by doing practically nothing, mail us your old drives today.

We can give the people here a step up the tech ladder, one rung at a time.
